Georgia Chess Association
MOHAR BACK TO SCHOOL KICK OFF – Scholastic and Open Chess Tournament July 26, 2025 Holiday Inn: 909 Holcomb Bridge Rd Roswell, GA 30076 4SS, G/25;d5
New to Mohar Chess – Team Trophies! Start school off right by adding to your school’s trophy case. A team is a minimum of 4 players in the rated sections attending the same school (as of the Fall 2025 semester). Teams have no upper limit; the more players on a team, the higher the chances for a good result, but only the top 4 players’ results count for the team total. The team gains points by winning or drawing rated games. Points are weighted, with results in higher sections worth more.
5 sections – An Open section for adults and advanced scholastic players, 3 Rated Scholastic-only sections for K-12 players and a Nonrated Scholastic practice section for new and young players. ROUND TIMES: First round is at 10:00AM, rounds 2-4 will start ASAP after the preceding rounds finish with a slightly longer break for lunch between rounds 2 and 3. We are usually done around 4 – 4:30 PM. NONRATED SECTION: The Nonrated section is for new/unrated players and players rated below 300 who need practice. While the rules of chess still apply, this is a more relaxed game designed to let new and young players experience chess without worrying about ratings. New players may choose to play in the Under 400 section if they want to become rated. 3 SCHOLASTIC-ONLY RATED SECTIONS - Under 400, Under 800 and Under 1200: These sections require an active US Chess Federation membership (https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess). New players wanting a rating play in the Under 400. OPEN SECTION: This Section is available to both adults and scholastic players. Scholastic players rated over 1199 must play in this section; however, any scholastic player rated 1000+ may choose to play in either the Open or kids-only Under 1200 section. Players will be placed in the section that matches their rating unless granted an exemption by the Tournament Director. Rated sections may be combined at TD discretion. ENTRY FEE: Early entry received through July 16 is $35. Registration is $40 from July 17 - 23. Late registration begins July 24 th and is $45. Same day, onsite registration is $50 and must be completed by 9:00AM to be paired for Round 1. Late sign ups may receive a ½ point round one bye.
