  • register here if you are an Emory Chess Club member, FIDE title player, USCF2300+ rated player, or and instructor who has already registered 3 players. Email webteam@georgiachess.org for the code. Please specify the tournament name.

Atlanta’s Second Major Rated Blitz Event

USCF added Blitz as a new time control in March. 

Work on your new Blitz rating!


Format: 7-double SS, G/3; inc 2s 


Rounds: 10am then ASAP (10 min break after 3rd round). 


Byes: Limit 2.  One round constitutes two games. If you wish to take a bye for a round, you must take byes for both of those games. You can take a bye for 2 rounds out of the 7. You must declare before pairings are up for Round 1.


Registration: online $20 by Nov. 14, $25 on-site from 9-9:30AM (ends promptly at 9:30; first round at 10am)


Late registrants may be forced to take a 1st round bye after 9:30 AM. All players must have current USCF membership.

Free Entry to: FIDE-titled players, and USCF 2300+ if pre-registered, EF is deducted from prize money. Emory Chess Club (ECC) members (ECC membership is only available to Emory students. ECC members must pre-register to receive free entry and may be required to help set up and clean up at the discretion of ECC President). Chess instructors who bring 3 students or more (you must pre-register students and yourself to get free entry).


Pairings: 7-round double Swiss (you play opponents once as white and once as black, constituting one round). Regular ratings may be used for seeding purposes. Rounds will be rated as two games.


Sections: Premier and U1600.  Official Blitz rating is used for determining sections, if a player has no blitz rating, official regular rating is used.  Sections are wide and no playing up will be allowed.   However, sections may be combined if there are few registrants with section prizes given out to those initially registered in their own section.


Prizes:  Premier: 1st $85,   2nd $55; U1600: 1st $55 2nd $40.

Prizes based on 25 paid entriesPrizes may increase with more entrants, and third place prizes may be added.  There are no class prizes.  Prize money will be mailed out or sent via paypal after the event, not paid out on-site.


Upset: $20.  The upset prize is awarded for the player who scores a win with the largest rating disparity over a higher rated player.  It is awarded for one round and is not aggregate.  Draws and forfeit wins do not qualify and Unrated players are not eligible.

Players are strongly advised to review USCF 5th edition rules for blitz.  See additional blitz rules: http://www.uschess.org/docs/gov/reports/BlitzRuleChanges.pdf Touch-move rule used, notation is not required, and insufficient losing chance claims will NOT be allowed.


Minors and particularly children under the age of 13 must be under the supervision of a responsible adult.  The TDs and tournament staff do not count for this purpose Emory University, the ECC, and the GCA are not responsible for unsupervised children.
