** Please do not begin registration until you have the following information for each player: 1. First & Last Name 2. Grade 3. USCF Number & expiration date 4. Board order of the players (strongest player = player #1). One coach/team parent will register the entire team at once.

The annual GCA sponsored K-8 State Championship event is open to school teams that have qualified through the Metro Atlanta State Qualifier and teams traveling from outside the Atlanta metro area. Additional teams may be allowed on a first come, first served basis (waiting list) to insure we have sufficient teams in each section to conduct a balanced tournament. If you are outside of the metro-Atlanta area and/or would like to be on the waiting list, please contact k8statechamp@georgiachess.org about competing.

State Championship titles will be awarded in four sections based on grade:

K-1 (Pre-primary)

K-3 (Primary)

K-5 (Elementary)

K-8 (Middle School)

Place trophies awarded through 5th place.  Any team with more than 8.5 points not receiving a place trophy will be given a Plus Score Trophy.

Format: Four rounds. Game/25 minutes with a five second delay (G/25; d5) for all sections. This is a head-to-head team tournament. Each team competes 4 versus 4 against another school team each round. Swiss System pairings. In determining standings at the end of the tournament, the primary factor will be the number of match wins.

Entry fee: $175 per team per section to play in the K-8 State Championship Tournament. Fee must be paid online at time of registration. Teams may invite additional alternates to compete in a separate Booster Tournament for an additional $125 per team per section. See Team Roster section below for more details.

Registration and payment deadline is Wednesday March 23, 2022. No on-site registration. Any team which has not registered by the deadline may be replaced by a team on the wait list.

Date and Time: March 26. First round starts at 10AM. Plan to arrive earlier than that. Awards ceremony ASAP after completion of the last round.

Round times: 10AM, 11:30AM, 1PM, 2:30PM

Team Roster: For the K-8 State Championship Tournament, a school team consists of 4 players and 1 or 2 alternates, with 4 students playing each round. For the $175 registration price, teams can register a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 players.

Teams can choose to pay an additional fee ($125) to register 8-10 students total per section. The extra alternate players will participate as 4-person teams in a separate Booster tournament.  Same rules, same format. Total price to register both a Championship Team and Booster team in a section is $300 and you must have a minimum of 8 players.

Team Ranking: Players must be ranked on the registration form in order of playing strength with #1 as the strongest player on the team. This ranking will govern which board position the player is assigned each round.
