  • RULES: The elementary, middle, and high school tournaments will all be run according to the same rules. Note that the elementary and middle school tournaments will be run as two separate tournaments on the same day. The tournaments will be run according to the international rules of chess.

The tournament will use a Swiss-System format under which all players will play six games at a time control of 15 minutes per player (30 minutes total). Players will receive one point for a win, half a point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. The player with the most points after six games is the victor. In the event of a tie for first place, a playoff will be conducted between all players tied for first. All tiebreak games will be played at a time control of 5 minutes per player (10 minutes total).

Tiebreaks for places other than first will be based on the cumulative score of the opponents. The player whose opponents performed better has the better tiebreak.

The team score is the sum of the top four scoring players from that team at the end of the tournament.

Where possible, teammates will not be paired against each other. In later rounds, teammates may be forced to play each other to preserve the integrity of the individual competition. Points from games will be scored normally. It is a boon and a curse to have teammates paired. The team is guaranteed one and only one point for the game (a win and loss or two draws).

  • Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams and the top three individuals in each tournament.
